Rotary Central TTK VHS Blood Bank
The Blood Bank is a joint project of Rotary Club of Madras Central, TTK Group and Voluntary Health Service. Established in 1997, this the state-of-the-art blood bank has facilities for comprehensive collection , processing and storage of blood and blood components. RCMC has provided modern blood processing equipment worth Rs 10 million (US$ 250,000) through a 3-H grant from Rotary International. A modern building measuring 8000 square feet was constructed at a cost of Rs 6.5 million on land provided by VHS.
Objectives of the Blood Bank
To provide high quality, safe blood and blood components to the poor and needy at an affordable cost. It is a non-profit organization where only the minimum charges are collected to meet the running costs of the blood bank, but is provided free of cost to those unable to pay even the minimum. the blood bank also provided free blood and components to the most needy who can not afford it .The services of the blood bank are available round the clock .
Facilities
State of the art equipment is used for testing blood, before being processed into blood components. The purity, potency, safety and efficacy of the blood components are tested to conform the international standards. There is adequate infrastructure to supply these to all clinics and surgeons of this city. Apart from whole blood , the blood bank supplies blood components including:
  • Packed red cells
  • Group specific frozen plasma
  • Platelet concentrate
  • Cryo precipitate
ANYONE CAN DONATE BLOOD
Blood donation is perfectly harmless to the lealthy person. It is painless and does not take much time. We appeal to every healthy person to in join this humanitarian service by becoming a donor and giving blood atleast once a year. It involves nothing more than hour of the individual’s leisure time, and it may mean saving a life .
What is the process to obtain blood and blood components?
An authenticated requisition for blood and blood components with details of the clinical condition of the patient from the attending medical person is required. The number of units, blood group and the component required, if any, should be specified. A fresh 5 ml of blood sample (clotted) must be sent along with the requisition and a thermo cool container to transport the blood. The blood grouping and compatibility test procedures will take about one hour and the compatible blood unit will be issued. The blood once issued will not be taken back by the blood bank . The blood units can be reserved in advance for patients who undergo planned, elective surgical procedures.
