Home Projects Tsunami
ANNAI SATHYA TSUNAMI REHABILITATION PROJECT
The tsunami of December 26 2004 left a trail of death and destruction along the TamilNadu coast in south India. More than 7000 persons perished in and around the turn of Nagapattinam .Tens of thousands were left homeless and the elderly and destitute in particular lived in pathetic conditions pending for themselves. Most tragically, hundreds of innocent children were orphaned, many of them losing both parents in the tragedy.
Rotary Club of Madras Central (RCMC) immediately joined the world wide planning and rehabilitation efforts. A spontaneous and magnanimous donation of US$ 25000 form rotary clubs in Sydney Australia provided the impetus.
The collector of Nagapattinam District outlined a vision which was a challenge and an opportunity to help those in desperate need. The challenge was accepted and a complex comprising of a residential building to house 200 orphaned children, a primary school for the tsunami effected children along with a senior citizens’ home.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • A 3-in-1 integrated facility in one complex.

  • Successful Government NGO collaboration

  • Extend of land: 1.6 acres allotted by TamilNadu Government

  • Children’s Residential Quarters: Four Units totaling 22000 square feet to house 200 children.

  • Primary School building of 8500 square feet will provide LKG to 6th standard.

  • Senior Citizens home of 5000 square feet to house 25 residence.

  • State of the art equipment and facilities for kitchen, dining bunker beds, recreation facilities, reading room, computer room and solar heating were all provided.

  • Project Cost: Rs.35 million (US $ 800, 000), completed in July 2006.

  • This project was made possible through major funding by several Organizations and individuals, besides many Rotary Clubs in India, US, and Australia.
